The History
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King and Mrs. Coretta Scott King visited Gandhigram on 20th and 21st February 1959 and had extensive interactions with Dr. G. ramachandran and Dr. Mrs. Soundaram Ramachandran, the Founders. They closely studied various activities of Gandhigram for the promotion of Peace and Justice, and Rural Transformation. He saw a Shanthi Sena (Peace Army) rally, addressed a prayer meeting and saw a cultural programme. Next day he visited neighboring poverty stricken villages to see some of the development activities . Dr. King later wrote to Dr. Ramachandran, “I might say to you that I was greatly impressed with your ability to interpret Gandhi. Out of the many people that I talked with in India, I left with the feeling that you had interpreted the life and teachings of Gandhi to us better than anybody else. Your clear, concise, and profound interpretations left an indelible imprint on my thinking. For this, I am deeply grateful to you”.
